Destination Profile

Ladakh Motorcycle Expedition - Beyond Khardung La

Private motorcycle expedition on Ladakh high-altitude roads, Changthang plateau

The Experience

Ladakh sits between 10,000 and 18,000 ft (3,048 and 5,486 m) in the rain shadow of the Himalayas and the Karakoram, which means it gets almost no precipitation. In summer the high passes open and for roughly 14 weeks the roads become rideable.

Every operator with a Royal Enfield and a booking form runs the same circuit: Khardung La, Nubra Valley dunes, Pangong Tso, back to Leh. That route has its reasons. It is also shared with hundreds of motorcyclists on a peak day in July.

We ride the other Ladakh: Shyok Valley east of Nubra, Wari La (17,388 ft / 5,300 m), and the Changthang plateau where villages like Nyoma, Lato, and Chushul are not on most itineraries because permits require additional paperwork and the roads between them are unpaved.

Why This Route?

Because the standard Ladakh tourist circuit is now exactly that - a tourist circuit. The roads to Marsimik La (18,314 ft / 5,582 m, the highest motorable pass in India) and the Changthang borderlands require permits that take weeks to arrange and that most operators skip. Those permits are the only reason those roads exist in the state they do - no trucks, no convoys, no chai stalls every 20 km.

Common Questions

What is the difference between the tourist Ladakh circuit and your routes?

The standard circuit covers Khardung La, Hunder dunes, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri. Our routes add Shyok Valley east of Nubra, Wari La at 17,388 ft (5,300 m), and Changthang villages like Nyoma and Lato that require additional permits and lead time.

How fit do I need to be for a Ladakh motorcycle tour?

You need solid cardiovascular fitness and core strength. Riding a loaded bike on loose terrain at 17,000 ft (5,182 m) is significantly harder than sea-level riding.
