Riding India — Questions International Riders Actually Ask

"These aren't generic marketing answers. Over the last 10+ years of riding India's most remote roads and guiding international riders, these are the real questions we sit down and answer over coffee before an expedition begins."

Before You Book

Planning timeline, partners, and custom requests.

How far in advance should I book?

For high-altitude routes like Ladakh and Spiti, we recommend booking 6-8 months in advance as the riding window is narrow and permits take time. For winter routes like Rajasthan or the Konkan Coast, 3-5 months is usually sufficient. Because we intentionally cap our expeditions at 4 riders, our calendar fills up very quickly.

Do you offer photography-focused expeditions?

Yes. In fact, many of our custom expeditions are built specifically for photographers. We adjust the daily pacing, integrate sunset/sunrise shooting windows, and guarantee the support vehicle has secure, shock-proof storage for heavy camera rigs.

Can two people share a motorcycle on the tour?

Pillion riding is entirely welcome. The Royal Enfield Himalayan is comfortable for two over long distances. However, for extreme routes like Spiti Valley or certain Ladakh passes, we strongly recommend reviewing your pillion's comfort with high-altitude off-roading before committing.

Can I come as a solo rider without joining someone else's group?

Yes. Every expedition we run is private to whoever is booking it. Solo riders get the full thing — your own itinerary, your own pace, optional support rider if you want someone to ride with. There is no shared batch, no mixer, no strangers. If you book as a solo, it is your trip.

I've never ridden in Asia before. Is India manageable?

India traffic catches most people off guard for about two days. After that it starts making a kind of sense. The places we ride — high passes, desert roads, coastal back roads — have very little traffic compared to the cities, which helps. We match route intensity to your actual riding background. If you have toured on a bike in Europe, the US, or Australia, you have what you need to start. We will be honest with you if a particular route is not the right fit.

What is the difference between a private motorcycle tour and a group departure in India?

On a group departure you are sharing the trip with people you have never met. The itinerary was set months ago. The pace is whoever is slowest. Stops are scheduled. On a CraftedMoto expedition there is no one else. We build the itinerary around your dates and riding style. You stop when you want to stop. If you want an extra day in Spiti because the road to Pin Valley looks worth it, that is your call.

Which Royal Enfield should I ride — the Himalayan 411 or the 450?

Depends on the route and your size. The 411 has been touring India for years and you can get parts for it anywhere including remote Spiti villages. It is honest and reliable and completely adequate for everything except the most technical terrain. The 450 has more power, better suspension, and handles the Ladakh and Spiti passes more comfortably if you are a taller or heavier rider. We talk through both during the planning call and put you on the right one.

On the Expedition

Physical fitness and daily realities of the tour.

How physically fit do I need to be for a Ladakh motorcycle tour?

You don't need to be an Olympic athlete, but you need solid core strength and cardiovascular health. Riding at 15,000+ feet with reduced oxygen while wrestling a loaded motorcycle over broken terrain is exhausting. We require all riders targeting the Himalayas to engage in basic cardiovascular preparation 2 months prior to arrival.

What kind of accommodations can I expect?

We completely reject generic chain hotels. Depending on the region, you will stay in 200-year-old Rajasthani hunting lodges, boutique seaside villas in Kerala, or premium heated dome tents in the high Himalayas. Comfort and authentic atmosphere are our top priorities.

Bikes & Logistics

Machines, paperwork, and technical breakdowns.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to ride in India?

Yes. By law, you must carry a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) stamped for motorcycles, along with your home country's valid motorcycle license. We will verify these documents before finalizing your booking to ensure smooth sailing with local authorities.

What travel insurance partners do you recommend?

Travel insurance that covers high-altitude motorcycle riding is mandatory. We strongly recommend World Nomads (Explorer Plan) because it uniquely covers riding motorcycles over 250cc on unpaved roads and covers medical evacuation. For extreme remote routes like Spiti or Ladakh, we also recommend a supplemental Global Rescue membership for field rescue from the absolute grid-edge.

What is the best motorcycle for touring India?

Without question, the Royal Enfield Himalayan. India's roads demand suspension travel, torque, and a low center of gravity. While heavy ADV bikes (like the GS1250) are great in Europe, they are a massive liability in deep Himalayan sand or chaotic Indian traffic. The Himalayan is purpose-built for this exact terrain.

What is the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 like for touring?

The new Himalayan 450 is a revelation. It features a liquid-cooled engine churning out 40hp, ride-by-wire throttle, and Showa suspension. It provides the highway cruising speed the old 411cc lacked, while maintaining the tractor-like ability to crawl over boulders. It is our flagship expedition machine.

What happens if I drop or damage the motorcycle?

It happens. We aren't riding pristine European asphalt. Minor scrapes and dropped bikes are part of adventure touring. Our on-ride mechanic carries spare levers, pedals, and tools to fix almost any damage immediately. You are liable for major structural damage, which is why your travel insurance must cover motorcycle touring.

Safety & Emergencies

Altitude sickness, solo riders, and extreme environments.

How do you handle altitude sickness in Ladakh?

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the biggest threat in the Himalayas. We counter this with a strict, non-negotiable acclimatization schedule. We spend 48 hours in Leh before crossing any passes. Our support 4x4 carries supplemental oxygen cylinders, and our guides are trained to recognize the earliest symptoms of AMS and immediately descend.

Is solo motorcycle touring in India safe for international riders?

India is generally very welcoming, but it is chaotic. The risk isn't crime; the risk is the unpredictable traffic, extreme weather, and mechanical failure in areas without cell service. Attempting a route like Spiti Valley solo as a first-timer to India is incredibly dangerous. Our infrastructure gives solo riders massive autonomy with the safety net of a discreet support system.

Costs and Value

What does a private India motorcycle expedition cost?

Most 10-14 day expeditions with CraftedMoto run $3,500-$6,500 USD per rider. The price includes the motorcycle, all fuel, accommodation, restricted area permits, support 4x4 with mechanic, airport transfers, GPS track, and 24/7 emergency support. It excludes international flights, travel insurance (mandatory), and lunches.

The cost difference from standard group tours reflects maximum-4-rider operations, route-specific permits, rider-grade accommodation choices, and a dedicated mechanic on every expedition.

Can I split the cost with friends to reduce per-rider pricing?

Yes. A group of 2-4 riders shares support infrastructure and reduces per-rider costs relative to solo pricing. We provide exact numbers against your route and dates.

Booking and Logistics

What documents do I need to ride in India as a foreign national?

A valid motorcycle licence from your home country plus an International Driving Permit endorsed for motorcycles. Both must be carried at all times.

Can you arrange airport pickup from Delhi, Mumbai, or other cities?

Yes. Airport transfers are included from route hubs including Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati, and Dibrugarh depending on expedition region.

What happens to my luggage while riding?

The support 4x4 carries all main luggage. Riders carry only a small day bag with documents, water, rain layer, and camera kit.
